Jenna Bisset, Learning Specialist

At Vermont Commons School, students who have an assessed or diagnosed learning difference are eligible to be on a learning plan (ISP) that offers accommodations and recommendations for the student. Teachers work with students to meet their needs, but we are not able to support all learning needs or differences.

Example of accommodations we offer:

  • extended time for testing
  • private setting for testing
  • use of computer in class for notes/assignments/tests
  • taking brief breaks from class to reengage attention
  • copies of teacher or peer notes for students with language based disabilities
  • waiving foreign language requirements
  • providing audio-books or other text to speech aids
  • allow students to clarify or rephrase questions with teachers before answering a question on a test or assignment
  • allowing the use of calculators during tests or exams
  • to exclude spelling from grading considerations
  • allow individual learning aids/tools in the classroom (thinking putty, stress balls, eyelighters, etc.)
  • coordination with content area tutors who come to VCS (additional fee applies)

Accommodations we do not offer:

  • auxiliary aids (taped course materials, interpreters, Braille, etc.)
  • an intensive therapeutic environment
  • any programming that would fundamentally alter our mission
  • modification of curriculum, with the exception of waiving of foreign language requirements
  • being excused from Encounter Weeks
  • a staff member to follow or support an individual student
